A Small but Telling Moment

Ramos stepped to the window, scanning the line of trees.

Then he paused.

“What is it?” Jenna asked, instantly alert.

“Not danger,” Ramos said slowly. “Something else.”

Ellie approached beside him, heart in her throat.

Fresh tracks in the snow.

Not boots.

Small pads.

A fox.

It had walked the exact edge of the tree line — watching, but not approaching.

Maybelle hopped onto the sill beside them and stared at the tracks, tail swishing.

Ramos chuckled under his breath. “Looks like your neighborhood watch has expanded.”

Ellie felt a strange rush of comfort.

Nature had its eyes too.

“See?” Jenna murmured. “Everyone’s helping.”

Ellie smiled faintly, warmth creeping through her chest despite the chill.

Maybe she wasn’t as alone in this as she felt.
